Sockspeare Presents King John

Though a sock puppet performance of Shakespeare's King John has the potential to be fun, this Sockspeare Theatre Group debut is just plain dull. The play has been cut to 70 minutes, but that's still 40 minutes too long: adding a dozen dumb jokes doesn't distract us from the fact these are shrill athletic socks with eyes prattling iambic pentameter. Derek Jarvis's staging is sloppy, and when a show is this boring it's hard to ignore the cast's flipping of script pages, flubbed lines, and inconsistent accents. Sometimes characters being addressed in the dialogue aren't even actually onstage at the time. Through 6/27: Mon-Tue 8 PM, Stage Left Theatre, 3408 N. Sheffield, 815-546-0788, $10.
