The talented southern filmmaker David Gordon Green (George Washington, All the Real Girls) heads north for this small-town drama, which he adapted from the 1994 novel by Stewart O'Nan. A young waitress (Kate Beckinsale), living with her mother and raising a three-year-old daughter, is harassed by her unstable, born-again husband (a mesmerizing Sam Rockwell); meanwhile a teenage boy (Michael Angarano) struggles with his parents' separation as he experiences first love with an oddball classmate (Olivia Thirlby). It's a relatively impersonal project for Green, though the performances are never less than genuine and the two stories unfold in graceful counterpoint as the movie hurtles toward a harrowing and heartbreaking conclusion. With Griffin Dunne and Amy Sedaris. R, 106 min.
