[snip] Looks like the Bears suck in more ways than one. Economists Brad Humphreys of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Dennis Coates of the University of Maryland have studied 37 cities with pro football, baseball, and basketball teams. Their finding, noted in a November 17 U. of I. press release: "The net economic impact of professional sports in Washington, D.C., and the 36 other cities that hosted professional sports teams over nearly 30 years, was a reduction in real per capita income over the entire metropolitan area."

[snip] The overstretched military. According to the Michigan City News-Dispatch (December 21), when La Porte County, Indiana, was hit with two feet of lake-effect snow the weekend before Christmas, national guard members had to be summoned from Rensselaer, two counties away, to rescue drivers stranded on I-94. "Most LaPorte County-based National Guard members were not able to respond because most are in southern Indiana preparing for deployment to Iraq."
