Smashed

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul star as married alcoholics whose relationship falls apart when the wife decides to give up drinking but the husband doesn't. This plays like an extended exercise for first-year acting students: most of the scenes revolve around plainly articulated conflicts and build to the expression of some primary emotion. It's familiar stuff, but at least it takes addiction and recovery seriously; the depiction of Alcoholics Anonymous feels particularly heartfelt. James Ponsoldt directed; with Nick Offerman and Octavia Spencer.
