To be fair, Marriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage states, "[t]here is nothing fundamentally wrong with the verb gift. It is, however, an uncommon word, and an unpopular one as well." See, Dictionary of English Usage p. 477. So, to be accurate, gifted is a verb and has been used as one for some time. Indeed, Marriam-Webster's dates its usage back to the 17th century. That noted, its usage as a verb is disfavored and seemingly is more at home in less formal settings. While I might have chosen a different word in this context, it seems to work just fine here.
