To be fair, Marriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage states, "[t]here is nothing fundamentally wrong with the verb gift. It is, however, an uncommon word, and an unpopular one as well." See, Dictionary of English Usage p. 477. http://bit.ly/lkFndY. So, to be accurate, gifted is a verb and has been used as one for some time. Indeed, Marriam-Webster's dates its usage back to the 17th century. That noted, its usage as a verb is disfavored and seemingly is more at home in less formal settings. While I might have chosen a different word in this context, it seems to work just fine here.
