Sleepwalking and Murmuring: New Work From UIC

The videos available for preview on this four-artist program of student work are provocative and playful, if a bit scattered. The black rectangle silhouetted against the sky in Anneka Herre's Monolith starts breaking up into dots, stripping it of the authority the one in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 has, but she includes a lovely time-lapse image of the night sky with moving stars. In Alex Grant's The Gardener (2005) a man makes much of the damage to a single leaf, and night shots render the images strangely unreal; his Felling the Forest Giants (2005) parodies traditional men-in-the-forest settings when a boy encounters a ridiculous “live” Smokey the Bear. 120 min.
