John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers) directed this spirited profile of gravel-voiced car salesman Michael Bennett, shown flying from California to Memphis to orchestrate a three-day “slasher” sale at a sleepy Toyota dealership. A hard-charging hired gun, Bennett guzzles beer and explains his strategy while auditioning hostesses (“I like the knockouts too, but sometimes if they're too pretty they offend the wives”) and marking up the inventory (“People say, 'What's a good deal on this?' 'Whatever you think is a good deal!'”). The sale itself is a long hard slog, with deadbeats looking for an $88 car Bennett has advertised, but Landis keeps this cooking with relentless montage and a sound track of Memphis soul classics. 85 min.
