Skygreen Leopards, Jennifer Castle, Quicksails

When: Mon., Sept. 15, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $12
Shambling Bay Area psych-folk duo Skygreen Leopards released their previous album, Gorgeous Johnny, in 2009, and this summer they finally followed it up with Family Crimes (Woodist). In the meantime, front man Donovan Quinn has been digging into his blearier side in the New Bums (with Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance) and on the comparatively fleshed-out solo album Honky Tonk Medusa (Northern Spy), but that hasn’t affected Skygreen Leopards’ sound a bit: reunited with Glenn Donaldson, his partner in that combo, Quinn falls right back into the hazy keyboards, sleepy grooves, and casual acoustic strumming that have defined it for nearly 15 years. The harmonizing of their frail voices evokes Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth’s ragged singing in the Jacobites, but where that band seemed entranced by the Faces, Skygreen Leopards love the Byrds—in “Mascara Priscilla” they sing, “I’m all right with the Christian life,” an obvious nod to the Louvin Brothers song “Christian Life,” which the Byrds cover on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. The duo’s customary rough edges are still in place on the new record too—it sounds like an informal porch session that just happens to include drums and keyboards. —Peter Margasak
