Our Review

The pork chops are grilled to order at this shoebox of a restaurant across the street from the Board of Trade. The owner and grill man, Steve Skrine, used to sit on the Board part-time (he now leases his seat), but pork chops are now his passion full-time. His eight-ounce center-cut chop is assertively seasoned, with garlic the most dominant of the proprietary blend of spices. It's an extremely tasty and mostly juicy chop that would benefit from a minute less on the grill and some resting time. Ordering carryout provides that needed rest and is 98 percent of Skrine's business. I had fun, though, eating on a stool in front of the picture window--a human advertisement for the delights of pork chops in the afternoon. Mashed Yukon Gold potatoes with heavy cream, butter, and garlic are the best of three homemade sides (bland red beans and rice and underseasoned blue cheese potato salad are the other two). The menu is rounded out with adequate ribs, grilled chicken breast, and a very solid chopped salad mixed with grilled pork tenderloin. Skrine's wife, Mary Rita, bakes delectable batches of brownies and chocolate-chip cookies, and his friendly sister, Stephanie, works the counter.
