Experimental shorts offering imaginative and idiosyncratic takes on sexuality and relationships. In The Sexual Economy of Ri local video maker Zach Stiglicz constructs a kinetic audiovisual collage using images from gay porn, pop culture, and his own life; superimposed aphorisms by Freud, Genet, and French philosopher Gilles Deleuze; and music that ranges from African tribal chant to pop songs by Janis Joplin and Patti Smith. The wealth of associative materials is stunning: like a patient making a breakthrough with his shrink, Stiglicz unleashes a torrent of guilt, fear, desire, pleasure, and self-love. Equally impressive is Lisa Yu's 16-millimeter animation Vessel Wrestling (2001), a stream-of-consciousness riff on sex and food that combines clay, gelatin, and rough hair to show a nude woman who's eventually intertwined with a nude man in a primordial ooze. Also showing: work by Thorsten Fleish, Kerstin Cmelka, and Christopher Bravo. 78 min.
