You’d think that the privilege of switching between Rangda (with Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano), New Bums (with Donovan Quinn), and his full-time combo, Six Organs Of Admittance, would be enough to keep guitarist-singer Ben Chasny from falling into a creative rut. But he’s spent the last couple years developing something he calls the hexadic system, which uses directions obtained from a deck of cards laid out in tarotlike fashion to break up habitual patterns of playing and composition. Drag City just published a book laying out the system, but you don’t need to read about it in order to recognize the changes it has wrought in Chasny’s playing. On the new Hexadic, also from Drag City, he steers clear of the fleet fingerpicking and heavy riffing that usually make him sound so galvanizing; instead, he and the rhythm section engage in a woozy slow-motion dance of feedback squalls and unstable grooves that staggers like Godzilla on a cough-syrup bender. The only other musician playing like this nowadays is Keiji Haino, but while Haino sounds like he’s conducting cosmic forces, Chasny seems to be letting them guide him. The Six Organs lineup changes from tour to tour; tonight Chasny is backed by bassist Andrew Mitchell and drummer Adam Payne. —Bill Meyer
