Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks | Open Door Repertory Company | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 16 2013
Price: $15-$25
The premise—lonely widow hires dance instructor for six weeks of private lessons at her condo—is fraught with possibilities. But few of them are realized in this sweet, shallow, sentimental, nearly sexless 2001 two-hander by Richard Alfieri. Instead, we get a carefully crafted two hours' worth of repeated bits (the client never answers the door quickly, the neighbor complains about the noise) and well-timed moments of unsurprising revelations (he's gay, she was unhappily married). That may explain why the performances in this uninspired Open Door Repertory production often feel forced: Mercita de Monk and Will Nifong just don't stand a chance when Alfieri gives them so little to work with. —Jack Helbig
