If the queens in La Cage Aux Folles converted to Catholicism, they just might live in the convent depicted in Alan Menken's fabulously gaudy disco musical, based on the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg movie about a lounge singer who witnesses a murder and hides out as a parish nun. With silly additions like love interest "Sweaty Eddie" and a plump Disney-type sidekick for the villain, Cheri and Bill Steinkellner's book makes the source material look like Strindberg. But Menken's glittery score is the point of the exercise, and this touring production delivers ensemblewide. It's telling that on opening night, Chicago actress Hollis Resnik stopped the show with a solo number that in other hands would be nothing more than filler. —Dan Jakes
