Sudanese native Ahmed Gallab, who makes music under the name Sinkane, has thrived as a flexible hired gun, working with the likes of Yeasayer, Eleanor Friedberger, and Of Montreal, among others. He also served as musical director for the huge extravaganzas in honor of Nigerian psych-funk musician William Onyeabor that took place in London, New York, and San Francisco earlier this year. Gallab’s range comes through loud and clear on the latest Sinkane album, Mean Love (DFA), which features a warm and slinky electro-soul set that traipses from style to style yet maintains cohesion thanks to the front man’s lovely falsetto. “How We Be” channels classic Curtis Mayfield, while the title track collides Smokey Robinsonesque pop-soul from the 60s with the liquid pedal steel of country music; “Omdurman” employs the winding horn charts and stuttering rhythms of vintage Ethiopian music, “Young Trouble” uses the rhythms of reggae, “Moonstruck” strolls along a lilting bossa-nova path, and “Galley Boys” layers languid dub bass beneath a melody that swipes fragments of the Etta James classic “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Sinkane’s influences are on display throughout the record, but rather than sounding like a copycat, he carves out his own niche by creating sly hybrids. —Peter Margasak
