Single Mothers, Dirty Nil, Jack Torrance

When: Sat., Feb. 21, 10 p.m. 2015

Drew Thomson is a snot. Or at least that’s what the Single Mothers front man and founding member probably wants you to hear in his snarling, bratty vocals and sarcastic, screw-off lyrics. Because, fuck it, all of his pretentious, uppity exes have wronged him, and he’s ready and willing to explain to his captive audience the who, what, when, where, and why of every letdown in his life. The band’s full-length debut, last year’s Negative Qualities (Hot Charity), is a roundhouse of tight, sweeping punk and thick, melodic hardcore that occasionally hollers at forces like the Bronx but ultimately carves out its own niche via Thomson’s unique and defiant strut. (If you believe that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit then please move along.) One particularly fun passage on Negative Qualities: the unstoppable “Marbles” barrels forward on a wave of crash cymbal and gurgling bass as Thomson takes jabs at the judgmental bookworm type with spiteful lyrics that go, “She’s all like, ‘Blah blah blah blah’ / Something about McSweeney’s / Something about her thesis / Something about its meaning / Something about whatever / Something like, ‘Why do you gotta be so mean?’” What a peach, right? —Kevin Warwick
