A pastiche of North by Northwest written by Colin Higgins (Harold and Maude) and directed with unusual verve by Arthur Hiller (Love Story). Gene Wilder stars as an archetypal tired businessman hoping for a rest by taking the train from Los Angeles to Chicago, finding instead adventure, mystery, romance, Jill Clayburgh, and Richard Pryor, not necessarily in that order. A marginally accomplished exercise in the basic pleasures of filmgoing.
