Eiji Okuda, one of Japan's leading character actors, made a solid directorial debut with this 2001 drama about a gruff middle-aged policeman transformed by his erotic affair with an adolescent schoolgirl. After their initial tryst in a hotel room, the girl slips away and the cop (Okuda) searches obsessively for her; eventually he discovers that she's the granddaughter of a tattoo artist who once decorated his back with a picture of a one-winged bird. This mythical symbol of unrequited love is typical of the movie's fairy-tale overtones as the characters' affair improbably deepens into real love. In Japanese with subtitles. 132 min.
