Shooter Jennings does occasionally make music that shows he’s his father’s son, but the real legacy he inherited from Waylon, the face of country’s outlaw movement in the 70s, is a disregard for convention. While I admire his refusal to play by the rules—as evidenced by his recent work with jazz drummer Erik Deutsch—that doesn’t change the fact that Shooter has made a lot of crappy music as of late, such as the 2011 sci-fi album Black Ribbons. I expected last year’s five-track EP Don’t Wait Up (For George) (BCR) to work within the tradition in paying homage to the great George Jones, but you all know what happens when you assume something. The record opens with the title track, composed for the Possum while he was still alive, which plods along via wan drum machines, electric keyboards, and a tired blues-rock vamp (the same bland production and arrangement turns up on his version of “She Thinks I Still Care”). The album’s a dud. Luckily, Jennings has always bounced back from subpar efforts like this, and when he’s joined by his working band as he is here, things always fall into line. Opening are Waymore’s Outlaws, featuring members of his father’s old band. —Peter Margasak
