Since the late 90s Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco "Bass" Mann) has been channeling his James Brown obsession into meticulous re-creations of the Godfather's hard-hitting funk. No matter which aggregation of his pals is playing them--from his old band the Soul Providers to the one-off Daktaris, who explored JB's influence on Afrobeat--the shuffling, syncopated beats, deep-pocket bass lines, propulsive guitar scratching, tight brass charts, and organ swells are impressively assembled. Though the crew hasn't broken the spell on Dap-Dippin' With...Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, a roundup of hard-to-find seven-inches on Roth's Daptone label, its pool of influences seems to have expanded slightly. Jones, a church-raised singer whose mother allegedly grew up with James Brown in Augusta, Georgia, goes through the paces at times, delivering a perfunctory get-'em-riled-up intro on track one and listing all those cities where folks are always dancin' in the streets on "The Dap Dip." But her gritty, gospelized pleading makes "Make It Good to Me" sound like a Stax gem from the late 60s, and she turns Janet Jackson's sly inquiry into a forceful demand on a tough rendition of "What Have You Done for Me Lately?"
