At a boarding school, four schoolboys escape their monotonous, strictly regimented lives by reading and acting out Romeo and Juliet together. Joe Calarco's 1998 script is a condensed version of Shakespeare's tragedy, augmented at crucial moments with excerpts from old-fashioned schoolbooks and the Bard's other writings. The all-male casting both harks back to Elizabethan stage tradition and introduces a strong homoerotic element to the tale of star-crossed love. The horseplay and violence in Tristan Brandon's staging for Idle Muse Theatre Company conveys youthful exuberance but gets a little too chaotic, occasionally obscuring the action. Still, the mushy stuff is handled beautifully, thanks to Andrew Lund's wide-eyed Juliet and Curtis Jackson's openhearted, swooning—and swoon-worthy—Romeo. —Zac Thompson
