Shakespeare's Cymbeline: A Folk Tale With Music

When: Wednesdays, Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 21 2013
Price: $30-$37
One of Shakespeare's last plays, Cymbeline is crowded with reprises of its author's signature plot twists and characters—the jealous lover, the wronged innocent, the conspiring rogue, the evil queen. In fact, it's so crowded that there's little room for poetry—or heart. David Rice and Michael Keefe attempt to strengthen this weak work by moving the action to Appalachia and adding original songs. Their adaptation contains some strengths: Shakespeare's lines sound surprisingly good in a hillbilly accent. And the songs aren't bad, though one wishes director Michael Goldberg had found more actors who could sing. But for every idea that works, two more fall flat. In the end, they prove that the last thing a crowded play needs is more stuff in it. —Jack Helbig
