Every year the SF Jazz Collective—I'd say it splits the difference between a repertory ensemble and an all-star band, but it's partly the first and entirely the second—picks a jazz giant to honor and hits the road; each member writes one original song and one new arrangment of a tune by the current honoree. In 2008 saxophonist Wayne Shorter got the nod, and this year pianist McCoy Tyner is being feted by the same impressive lineup, minus vibist Stefon Harris: tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, trumpeter Dave Douglas, trombonist Robin Eubanks, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland. On the group’s self-released three-CD set chronicling the 2008 season, Shorter’s indelible, mercurial compositions generally outshine the original material—it seems to me that sometimes the collective firepower of the band makes it hard for individual brilliance to show through. Still, I can't imagine a roster this stellar playing an entire set without throwing some sparks. —Peter Margasak
