To the editors:

I just got back from the Chicago International Film Festival's screening of "Supersonic Shorts 1: Chicago Meets the World" at the Music Box Theater. As a civic duty, I usually attend at least one festival event. It is now also with a sense of duty that I must report that Chicago's meeting with the world was an embarrassment beyond my powers to describe. Of the eight shorts presented, three were by Chicago filmmakers--D.P. Carlson, Justin Krohn, and Vanessa Buccella. Seen individually, they would have played like two very amateurish student projects and one mawkish, poorly acted after-school special. But in the context of an international festival, back to back with excellent shorts from Poland, Thailand, Israel, France, and Ireland, these three pieces of crap were nothing short of a disgrace to the city. If that's the best work we can come up with to represent us at our own festival, then we're fucked.
