Like Eugene O’Neill, August Wilson likes to paint a wide canvas, peopling it with so many detailed portraits that you’d be forgiven for forgetting who the protagonist is. In this 1995 play, Wilson gives us seven carefully wrought characters: the flawed but talented bluesman Floyd "Schoolboy" Barton (doomed to always be on the verge of the big time) and six others who are tangled up in his complicated life. It is a measure of the grace and power of Ron OJ Parson's production that he knows how to give everyone their moment in the spotlight without letting anyone overshadow the lead. It helps that Kelvin Roston Jr. feels so right as Wilson's infuriating—but always charming—Barton. —Jack Helbig
