Serengeti, I Heart Lung, DM Stith

When: Sun., March 8, 9:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $3
Drummer Tom Steck and guitarist Chris Schlarb, aka LA duo I Heart Lung, recorded the core of last year’s Interoceans (Asthmatic Kitty) in August 2005, improvising freely for two days in a studio. Over the next few years seven guests—among them guitarist Nels Cline, pedal-steel whiz Dave Easley, and trumpeter Kris Tiner—overdubbed new parts, gradually transforming the raw duo tracks into a sumptuous, richly textured suite that’s impressively coherent even as it draws on genres as diverse as prog rock, ecstatic drone, Fahey-style Americana, and free jazz. Given that the music was also remixed and edited during that process, I can’t guess how the original sessions might’ve sounded, and this raises an interesting question: Will Steck and Schlarb improvise onstage or try to adapt album material? They’re touring as a duo, but who knows what might happen here—I Heart Lung has a lot of friends in California’s underground hip-hop scenes, and tonight’s headliner, local MC Serengeti, raps on a remix from Interoceans by Jel of Subtle. DM Stith opens. —Peter Margasak
