As contradictory as it may seem, experimental dance has its own well-worn paths--traditions that some choreographers follow and others throw brickbats at. For this Hedwig Dance Lab showcase, "Seeing Triple," three young choreographers were given rehearsal space, feedback, and the chance to show their developing dances to the public. Amy Alt, who has made many steely experimental dances, went out on a limb by trying a traditional dance set to music she loves. She describes Git-Together as a dance party for six women doing steps from the classical and modern dance canons set to Hungarian folk music. Marianne Kim's Wishing on a Pink Bazooka is more traditionally experimental: she uses loopy images--bubble gum chewing, text appropriated from Bazooka Joe comics, squirt guns and tin cans, and a song about winning the lottery--to address people's wish to have power over others. The message may be weighty, but the images promise to be weird and airy. Ann Boyd, intrigued by a short story about the feelings shaping a family, made a piece that's equal parts dance and theater: words carry the plot in Sister Sister, but the emotional story is told in movement. Boyd, who directed and helped adapt the well-received play Weetzie Bat at the Organic Theater Greenhouse last year, has crossed the line between dance and theater many times. A solo by Boyd and a duet by Kim round out the program. Thursdays at 7:30 and Fridays and Saturdays at 8, June 2 through June 11, in the dance studio of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington; $6-$10. (Preperformance benefit June 2 is $25-$100; see listing for information.) Call 907-2192 for tickets and info.
