Secret Places

Friendship grows between a young German refugee (Marie-Theres Relin) and an English girl (Tara MacGowran) at a provincial girls school during the early years of World War II. Writer-director Zelda Barron tosses in every dramatic element that comes to mind—air raids, budding sexuality, social persecution, lesbian temptations, suicide attempts—but can't seem to develop any of them; despite all the upheaval, the film settles down as a tepid, indifferently mounted nostalgia piece. With Cassie Stuart and Jenny Agutter (1985).
