In a recent concert review for the New York Times, Jon Pareles uses the terms “stately,” “tacky,” “goofy,” “jokey,” “Baroque,” and even “quasi-Baroque” to describe Sebastien Tellier’s music and mien. He is correct on all counts but leaves out one thing: Tellier, a well-connected French singer-songwriter, is the very definition of NuHammer, an ironic, supersynthetic take on 80s electro-rock that’s so dead-on it borders on homage. On his Daft Punk-produced debut, Sexuality (Record Makers), Tellier’s well-tempered keys climb dramatic crescendos, which he bookends with breathy moans o’ pleasure that are pure fromage—it’s no wonder France chose his song “Divine” as its entry for this year’s Eurovision song contest. (It came in 19th.) While he’s no pioneer, Tellier is one of the most visible practitioners of the burgeoning genre, which updates the Jan Hammer sound for the post-bloghouse masses. Hey Champ opens. —Jessica Hopper
