Second-wave emo band American Football, which broke up in 2000, recently announced a pair of reunion shows this fall, and the timing couldn’t be better. American Football is like the Velvet Underground to a legion of emo-loving kids across the world, who’ve started bands that use AF’s self-titled LP as a blueprint to build songs whose delicate, interlocking guitars land like a ton of bricks. Southern California four-piece Seahaven bear that influence too, but instead of sounding stuck in an eternal autumn like American Football, they’re summery and romantic—anytime I listen to their new Reverie Lagoon: Music for Escapism Only (Run for Cover), I can picture myself digging my toes into the sand along the Pacific, getting lost in the view and the crashing of the surf. It helps that Seahaven mix their fourth-wave emo with resplendent postrock and easygoing, quasi-symphonic folk, giving tracks such as “Paseo de las Estrellas (II)” and “Love to Burn” an alluring, intimate tenderness despite their sweep and scope. —Leor Galil
