Your questions are astute and well-asked.

I think Roger is simply feeling guilty of his class-based indifference and privilege all along as Tao is aging and dying. Not sure if it's a very Confucian thing, but it seems pretty natural to me (a Hong Kong Chinese) that Roger, as a wealthy bachelor, SHOULD take care of his surrogate mother Tao, who sacrifices her youth and time for his sake throughout her life, and who is deservedly depicted as more likeable and respectable than Roger's biological yet quite dysfunctional mum.
