Science Chicago: Life's a Lab

When: Mon., Sept. 15, 7 p.m. 2008
Phone: 773-684-1414
This sprawling celebration of science, "a year of hundreds of inter-related activities and events," per MacArthur Foundation president Jonathan Fanton, one of the region's "major thought leaders" sponsoring the undertaking, includes lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, classroom activities, film screenings, and tours of places like the Argonne National Laboratory, the Chicago Botanic Gardens, a recycling plant, outlying geological formations, and the University of Illinois Medical Center ("includes viewing real surgeries; light refreshments will be served"). The whole shebang kicks off with a lecture by astrophysicist and Nova ScienceNow host Neil deGrasse Tyson. Costs vary; most events are free. See the Web site for ongoing schedule.
