School Reform: Thanks to Us, It's Working

To the editors:

While I could refute almost point by point the assertions made in Florence Levinsohn's article [November 8] on School Reform at Stockton School and my candidacy for community representative of its Local School Council, which was often inaccurate and extremely biased, it would in effect develop into its own article of equal length, so I will not do so here.

I would merely like to point out that Stockton, a school with scores that averaged well below city and state averages in 1989, has begun to show improvement thanks in part, in my opinion, to the attention being given to it from all segments of our community.

Rather than making snide comments about the makeup of our diverse neighborhood population, I think that credit might be given to people who, without even having children in the school, have worked so hard to improve aspects of the program. In my view, therein lies a significant story of School Reform, one which Ms. Levinsohn chose to neglect. Efforts by community groups such as ours can help to ensure that Chicago's experiment in School Reform will be a success.
