Chicago high schoolers Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) and Sara (Julia Stiles), whose interracial relationship tests loyalties that are both political and emotional, have the deck stacked against them. They have enough to worry about—he has to avoid a life of crime so he can go to med school, she has to get over the death of her mother and learn how to liven up stodgy ballet routines with hip-hop—without the additional burden of having to be dramatic icons representing their races. Thomas Carter directed this 2001 feature from a screenplay by Duane Adler and Cheryl Edwards; with Kerry Washington, Fredro Starr, Terry Kinney, and Bianca Lawson.
