Bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal aren’t known for their restraint, but the scene exemplified by the indulgent likes of Iron Maiden and Grim Reaper also produced one of the leanest, strongest metal bands of the era: Newcastle five-piece Satan, founded in 1979. Sure, at the climaxes of their songs the vocals often slip into an over-the-top falsetto, but compared to most of their peers, these guys were working in a streamlined, hyperdriven style, like an early form of speed metal or thrash—they started tearing up triple-time rippers years before any of the Big Four formed stateside. Over the years, Satan have broken up and re-formed a handful of times, releasing albums under a couple different names, including Blind Fury and Pariah, but they’ve never started to suck. In fact they’ve aged remarkably well: on last year’s Life Sentence, the same five dudes who recorded 1983’s classic Court in the Act sound just as nimble, evil, and powerful as they did back then. —Luca Cimarusti
