A fisherman separated from his wife by two decades of war returns, only to reveal that he's married again and has fathered a child. She's heartbroken, and life gets even more complicated when his young daughter shows up. Nguyen Thanh Van's 1999 ultra-low-budget film has awkward sound effects and a choppy narrative. But its core is affecting, merging melodrama and history, the camera alternating between noirish close-ups of individual torment and longer shots of the impoverished villagers, including people who lost limbs in the war. In Vietnamese with incompetently translated subtitles. 87 min.
