Sand | Annoyance Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays. Continues through Oct. 8 2015
Price: $6
This show from improv troupe Sand, featuring musical accompaniment by Tim Joyce, is staged in a peculiar three-part run: the first part (through September 3) explores the lives of three characters; the second (September 10, 17, and 24) is a free-form improv culminating in an abstract piece; and the third (October 1 and 8) features Sand improvising, directing, and shooting a film. On the night I attended, exploring character, Thomas Kelly kicked things off as a cackling robot nerd, followed by Mike Brunlieb as a thoroughly creepy old crone and Scott Nelson as an increasingly agitated wise guy. Physicality is both the trio’s strength and its crutch, with wild gestures, vocalizations, and occasional kissing scenes highlighting each scenario. The second act, which brought the characters back in more fantastical circumstances, felt stronger, highlighting the group’s singularly weird onstage approach. Sand might do better even farther off the deep end. —Marissa Oberlander
