Mount Carroll is also home to the original campus of Chicago's Shimer College, now occupied by the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies. There might be a ghost or two in that end of town as well...

Re: “Homer Simpson, Don Draper, and other sociopaths

In addition to being an author, Adam Kotsko is a professor at Shimer College, the Great Books college of Chicago (where he has observed that Shimer has "more Irigaray in its curriculum than any other Great Books school"). And very happy we are to have him.

And in addition to being a Chicago composer, Laurie Spiegel is a graduate of Shimer College, the Great Books college of Chicago -- although at the time of her attendance there, it was still located a few hours to the west, in Mount Carroll. Re: “Columbia College president to student: 'Shut up'

Comparing this story to the Shimer College crisis of 2010 (as reported by the always excellent Ms. Isaacs here: http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archi… ) shows the importance of Shimer's participatory governance structures in keeping executive power in check.

When the only vote students have is the one they cast with their feet, the consequences for a tuition-driven college can be extremely ugly. That's a lesson Shimer itself learned at great cost 45 years ago, and it seems that Columbia may be in the process of learning the same hard lesson. Here's hoping they pull through.
