Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 16 2008

Not every company would have survived the shifts in leadership this troupe has undergone over its 11 years. But chameleonic SPDW has actually flourished under five different artistic directors, who've exposed the dancers to works by a whole host of choreographers. This weekend SPDW presents a premiere by yet another. In Stamina of Curiosity: Everywhen, Molly Shanahan adapts her groundbreaking solo movement for five dancers—and these organic, unpredictable, seamlessly combined phrases prove mesmerizing en masse. Part of an ongoing look at the symbiosis between observers and the observed, the piece is punctuated by welcome moments in which the performers simply stand and watch each other. I Live in Perfect, an exhilarating, thoughtful new quintet by Ashleigh Leite (who's choreographed for SPDW before), takes an abrupt turn when its music changes midway through. The same athletic phrases set to the Magnetic Fields' "The Way You Say Good-Night" in the first half have a much more somber feeling in the second, set to Leite's own sound design, which blends string music with industrial rumblings. Also on the program: company premieres of Joanna Rosenthal's Auto-Body and the moving 1989 sextet To Have and to Hold, by another pair of newcomers to SPDW, Shapiro & Smith. —Laura Molzahn
