Re: “Do newspapers think we can't see who's missing?

This underemployed editor appreciates your commentary. Always have. It's nice to know there are people out there who can read between the lines and see all the empty desks.

Re: “We're the Tribune, and we endorse this endorsement

Well done. You've summarized this well and I appreciate it.

Re: “A Hard One to Spin

As harsh as this may sound, I do not think any of this is entirely unexpected -- the corporate lingo for cuts -- "achieving greater efficiencies in personnel" -- have been floating around in company memos and coverage in other publications for a long time. No one should be surprised. That said, it still stinks, and it is tough to work each day when you know that folks you've worked with -- and thoroughly enjoyed working with -- are now unemployed and going through their own pains. Couple that with your own heart breaking for them, and a growing weariness over the past three years or more with each new round of cuts. It is demoralizing, certainly. But Sun-Times Media is just one company of many in this industry that failed to consider the long-term future until it was too late to catch up with the Internet. Now everyone is scrambling to stay afloat. My hope is that the news media survives without surrendering things like dedication to truth, objectivity, quality of writing and editing and visual journalism -- the kinds of things that drew many of us into journalism in the first place.
