Chances are you’ve never seen Sabbat live—these tireless Japanese warriors, who helped popularize thrash and black metal in their homeland, barely toured abroad in the 80s and 90s. But they’ve made it easy for you to get a taste of the experience: astonishingly, they’ve made more than 40 live albums in their 30-year career. Sabbat are also relentlessly prolific in the studio, releasing a flood of EPs and splits that even their most fervent fans must have trouble keeping up with. Currently a trio led by bassist, front man, and sole remaining founding member Gezol, the band gave collectors a leg up this spring with the massive box set Earlyearslaught (Nuclear War Now!). It consists of ten discs of demos, early EPs, rehearsal tapes, cover songs, unreleased alternate versions, and live recordings, plus two DVDs—and they all show Sabbat to be a fierce and fervent band on the black/thrash cusp, howling like a typhoon and reveling in their love of Venom. Sabbat share the bill with Metalucifer, which began in 1995 as a Sabbat side project and still includes Gezol and original Sabbat guitarist Elizaveat, who left in 1991; at this show a special lineup will bring the two outfits together. This is a rare opportunity to see a pivotal band in the history of Asian metal. —Monica Kendrick
