As Obey City, producer Sam Obey weaves featherweight electronics into plush cushions of pop indebted to the synthy chintz of 80s radio hits and the blunt sensuality of 90s R&B, refracting them through a futuristic prism. The outmoded sounds of the Brooklyn beat maker’s combinations feel like they’ve been trapped in amber for decades, yet he deploys his forward-thinking production style—which includes shape-shifting percussion, bustling bass lines, and luminescent synth flares—without coming off as overly arch or insincere. It’s a hard pairing to pull off, but Obey succeeds more often than not, and on February’s Merlot Sounds EP (LuckyMe) he does so with a little help from some friends. Magnetic R&B singer Kelela’s appearance on the standout “Airy” is particularly notable; her controlled, sumptuous vocals feed off the song’s echo-treated drums to both create drama and refresh some familiar, tired sounds.
