As South by Southwest has sprawled beyond the limits of human comprehension, the festival-related hype that used to be concentrated on a handful of acts has become considerably more diffuse. There was no clear "it" band this year, but I heard a number of reliable sources praise LA-based singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe, who had a packed schedule in Austin. That inspired me to seek out last year's Apokalypsis, whose intriguing songs balance bleakly intense vintage goth and Stevie Nicks-style Laurel Canyon witchiness—and include just enough black metal hovering at their edges to earn her a gig at legendary Dutch metal fest Roadburn. Unknown Rooms (due October 16 on Sargent House) is a much subtler record, with Wolfe's voice backed by little more than an acoustic guitar and string trio. Messing with a formula that's paid off so well so far is a bold move for her, but it goes a long way toward proving that she's more to offer than trendiness. —Miles Raymer Russian Circles headline; Chelsea Wolfe and Marriages open.
