On last year's Triple Play (Max Jazz), his first trio album in a recording career spanning two decades, Russell Malone reinforces his reputation as a standard-bearer for mainstream jazz guitar. His clean hollow-body tone trains your ear on his elegant, unfussy lines, which nonchalantly reflect decades of jazz history. Malone can focus on any style within a performance, and often references many of them in a single solo—and he can do it without sounding like a dilettante. For example, on "Sweet Georgia Peach" he journeys through chicken-scratch funk, deep blues, and sleek postbop, while drummer Montez Coleman lays down muscular New Orleans second-line grooves. Though Malone won't necessarily challenge you, every so often he'll have you shaking your head over how he got from point A to point B. For this local stint, Malone will be joined by bassist Tassili Bond and drummer Darrell Green. —Peter Margasak
