Rush

Ron Howard's penchant for the formulaic and sentimental is on full display in this action drama about James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), rival Formula 1 racers who went toe-to-toe during the 1976 Grand Prix. Bathed in warm cinematography—almost identical to that used in Howard's underrated genre bender The Dilemma (2011)—and making unexpected use of avant-garde framing techniques, it's easily his most visually ambitious work to date, though the computer-generated race scenes pale in comparison to Justin Lin’s pulsating Fast & Furious films. This is entertaining enough, but ultimately it's spuriously triumphant Oscar-baiting fluff.
