The stars of this 1998 action comedy, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, are kind of sweet and amusing as reluctant partners working on a kidnap investigation. The victim's father—the Chinese consul, who'd come to the U.S. after the British handover of Hong Kong—calls in a detective from the Royal Hong Kong Police (Chan) to assist the FBI, who've enlisted a loose cannon from the LAPD (Tucker) to keep him out of their hair. The contrast between Tucker's motormouth and Chan's man of few words should be funnier, but the plot—which is cliched without quite becoming self-reflexive—and the uneven pace dampen most of their moments. Directed by Brett Ratner; written by Jim Kouf and Ross LaManna. 98 min.
