Rodney Vaccaro adapted this fine coming-of-age drama from his own play, And the Home of the Brave, but there's nothing stiff or cramped about Paul A. Kaufman's sensitive, beautifully edited film. Set in the rural south during World War II, it focuses on three characters: Ruby, whose husband may have been killed in the Pacific; her daughter, Opal; and a handsome, homeless stranger who disrupts their long emotional winter. The premise may sound elemental, even cliched, but the film is intelligent and moving. 101 min.
