Rumi: Poet of the Heart

Haydn Reiss's attractive 1998 documentary on the 13th-century Persian mystic and poet Jelaluddin Rumi features testimonials from New Age apostles Deepak Chopra and Robert Bly extolling his writings on the Sufi way of life, which they've ridden up the best-seller lists. But Rumi translator Coleman Barks dominates this love fest, reciting some of the poems to Persian music. Don't expect in-depth biography or literary analysis: this feel-good item would make a lovely gift in a PBS pledge drive.
