Re: “The Silver Lining Party

Well written article overall!

A clarification/correction on the comments by Thom Clark:

He states that the US is not a "parliamentary system" as if this is a requirement for multipartism, and as if all such systems are inherently multiparty (neither is true). What's more, he says we are a "representative republic" (which we are) but with the implication that such a system is (a) necessarily not multiparty (which is not true) and (b) that a parliamentary system is not such a system (which is also not true).

Unfortunately, beyond just spreading misinformation about basic facts about forms of democratic government, it also leaves the problematic suggestion that for this country to have a multiparty system, we would have to switch over to something perceived to be completely different and/or foreign (i.e. like the British) to do it, and mistakes the reason for why we are a two-party system.

We need to educate each other on these important facts if we want people to understand how democracies and multiparty systems really work.
