Compared to 2011’s Canopy EP, Painted Palms’ upcoming Carousel seven-inch (imminent on Polyvinyl) thankfully relies less on the tie-dyed tribal rhythms of, say, Animal Collective. The San Francisco duo (cousins Reese Donohue and Chris Prudhomme) has ditched the monkey-and-toucan jungle noises of the EP too, and now seems to be shooting for what a Toaster-filtered Instagram of an urban landscape might sound like—exactly the kind of photo that’s on the cover of Carousel. The record’s title track is melodically simple dream-pop, far removed from the giant electro-synth swoops on Canopy and perfectly suited to sipping a cocktail in a hammock. Painted Palms aim to release their debut full-length at the end of the year, and if Carousel’s buoyant, hazy songs (and the duo’s current tour with the equally breezy and laid-back Ruby Suns) are any indication of the album’s direction, it’ll be worth the wait. —Kevin Warwick Ruby Suns headline.
