Footwork would be nothing if it weren’t for Kavain Space, aka RP Boo. In the late 90s he toyed with the gnarly, stark sounds of ghetto house, eventually mapping out the fast-paced, rhythmically complex dimensions of footwork. (Inspiration no doubt came from his time as a member of legendary Chicago dance outfit House-o-Matics, which he joined in 1993.) The wild, captivating movements that are at the heart of footwork dancing started cropping up in the early 90s, and Space pushed forward on a sound fit for the acrobatic, gear-shifting flow. His progression as a producer is documented in Classics Vol. 1 (Planet Mu), which is the first proper collection of some of his indelible early material. The 1997 track “Baby Come On” is widely believed to be the first footwork cut, and though it doesn’t quite match the discombobulating ecstasy of Space’s later work, it’s got a forceful, trancelike pulse that’s hard to resist. The Classics EP comes out in time for his performance at tonight’s fund-raiser for the Akili Preparatory School in Kenya, hosted by East Room in partnership with the San Francisco nonprofit Mama Hope. —Leor Galil
